#19 College Life in New York City

Hi, everyone😊 How's going? It's been a stressful week for me because of mid-term exams and those stuff. Today, I'm feeling like I want to tell something about my personal "real" life. I know everything is real but focusing on me as a person.

It's been 6 months since I came to New York City from Japan and started to go to college here. Time flies so fast! And these days, I often receive messages and questions about my college life in New York City through my Instagram, so I think it's the time to tell something about my college life and studying abroad in the U.S.

みなさんこんにちは😊 いかがお過ごしですか？今回は、ちょっと色々考えたのですが、ニューヨークに引っ越してきてちょうど半年が経ちますし、最近よくニューヨークでの大学生活のことや、留学のことについて個人的に質問など沢山いただくので、そのことについて少し書いてみようかなと思います😘 参考になれば幸いです。

1. Why I chose New York City to study?

Actually I am still a university student in Japan and I took a long absence from there to come to New York City(ｗell, I will probably quit soon though). In Japan, I was majoring in British and American Studies which is basically about English languages, histories, politics and business in the U.K. and North America. However, I changed my mind about my future career. I always wanted to study about fashion or art since I grew up among people who work in the art field, including my father and brother.

Then, I thought I should study in one of the fashion cities, such as Paris, London, Milan and New York, and I chose here, New York City because I've been to the U.S pretty often before. So I thought it is easy for me to start my new life here. And studying abroad in the U.S was always my dream since I was 14 years old. Right now, I am majoring in Fashion Merchandising and Management at private college in New York City. 😊

1．なぜニューヨークを選んだのか！

本当はずっと、アメリカの大学に通いたいと思っていたのですが、やっぱり日本の高校の卒業は3月、アメリカの新学期は9月に始まるということもありますし、SATなどの受験に必要な試験を受ける機会もなく、高校を卒業するときには、特になにがしたいのかなんてあまり深く考えていませんでした😓 なんとなく英語が好きだし、、、という理由で日本の大学では英米語を専攻していました。もちろん、日本の大学で出会った友達たちはすごく優しくて面白くて、今でもよく連絡を取っていますし、何人かはニューヨークにも来てくれました💗 でもある日、ふと自分がしたいことは何だろう？と考えると、やっぱりアメリカの大学に行きたかった！という想いと、ずっと勉強したいと思っていたファッションやアートのことが頭に浮かんできました。そして、どうせ行くならファッションの街に行こう！いっそのこと大学を編入してしまおう！と考えて、英語や数学などの必要な試験を受けて、今はニューヨークの私立大学でファッションビジネスの勉強をしています😊 👗

2. What are the differences between College in the U.S. and in Japan?

I know there are several types of college or university in the U.S. So, of course, the education systems are depending on the college you go. But in this case, I will tell some basics.😉📚

In Japan, it is terribly hard to enter the colleges or universities. Many people usually go to cram schools (like the school which is out of the actual school they go, and they usually study after school there and they pay for it) to pass the entrance exams of college. Additionally, we also have similar exams like SAT here. But we have eight~ subjects including Modern Japanese Language, Classical Japanese, Math and World history. It takes 2 days to take these exams. And then, we can choose the college or university TO TAKE an entrance exams depending on the scores of them. However, I would say, once we entered the college, we rarely fail.

I think the college system in the U.S is opposite. Though it is a big deal to enter the college, getting degrees here is much harder than it.

Another thing is about class hours. In the U.S, the class hours are much shorter than in Japan. In my college here, I usually have classes from 9:30am and I get out of the class around 12pm or 2pm (3~5hrs per a day) and get huge assignments for each class. When I was in Japan, I usually had classes from 9am until 6pm, and assignments were not that hard.

2. アメリカのカレッジと日本の大学は何が違う？

もちろん、大学によってシステムは大きく違ってくるので、今回は基本的なことを少しお伝えします😉　

まず、アメリカの大学は卒業することがとてもたいへんです！日本の大学は、入学することがとても難しくて、沢山の人が塾などに行って勉強しますよね。アメリカでも、もちろん大学に入学することは大ごとですが、卒業することはもっとたいへんです。授業の出席率はかなり重要視されますし、授業中に手を挙げて発言しなくてはいけません。発言をしないとそもそも出席していると認められないクラスがほとんどです😓 そして、もうひとつ留学生(※交換留学生ではない）として来ている人が苦労することは、単位をひとつも落とすことができないことです。アメリカのビザの問題に関わることなのですが、ひとつでも単位を落としてしまうことがあれば、その後アメリカでの勉強を続けることができません。つまり、自分の国に帰らなくてはいけません。ちょっと怖いですよね😓 そういうわけで、留学生組はかなり勉強熱心に見えます。ちなみに私の大学ではGPA3.0以上をキープすることも重視されていて、それが学費に大きく関わるので私を含めて大学の友達たちはGPAにとてもこだわっています。

もうひとつ大きな違いは、授業時間の違いです。アメリカの多くの大学がそうだと思いますが、日本に比べると授業数/時間がとても少ないです。私の大学では、朝から授業を詰めれば、お昼頃～過ぎには毎日授業が終わります。とても早いです。それに私は金曜には授業を取っていません。そのかわり、課題の量がとても多く、課題をこなすことに何時間も費やさなくてはいけません😖 授業は早く終わっても、結局たくさんの人が学校に残って勉強したり、家でかなり勉強している、、、という感じです。

3.What are the best things/ things I don't like about New York City?

The things I don't like about New York City is that everything is expensive here especially rent fees and restaurants comparing to Japan, and the subway often delays. I just read the article about the subway and it said that the subway delays 70000 times a month on average in New York City. I often frustrated with the subway issues.

One of the best things is that my friends here are really kind and they always help me to study and to understand the classes. Some of my friends often help me to do photo shoot and those stuff as well. I am so lucky to have those lovely and smart squads.

Another thing is there are so many museums and art galleries in New York City. Since I love going to museums to see art or fashion exhibitions, it is really good to have opportunities to go to these places. Especially, it is really valuable for me that I can often attend the fashion events and I can meet people who are working in the fashion industry. 😘

It is "NEW YORK CITY"!! There are so many chances to be whoever I want, to do whatever I want and to meet new people. That's why I love New York City.

3. ニューヨークの好きなところ/ 嫌いなところ

まず嫌いなことを先に言うと、何でも高価なところです。特に家賃やレストラン代は日本にいた時に比べてかなりかかっているな～と感じています😖 そして、地下鉄の遅延！ニューヨーク市内では毎月平均7万回の遅延です。逆にどうしたらそんなことになるのか驚きですよね。

好きなところは、まず友達です！みんなとにかく優しくて、勉強やブログのこと、写真のこと、なんでも付き合ってくれます。友達に恵まれているということ、ニューヨークに来てからすごく実感しています💓 あとは、アートギャラリーや、美術館、博物館が数えきれないほどある、ファッションイベントが沢山ある、業界で仕事をしている人に会える、ということも、私がニューヨークが好きな理由のひとつです。

でも、何といっても「ニューヨーク」！チャンスに溢れた街だと感じています。なりたい自分になれる、したいことができる、いろんな人に会える！そんな街ニューヨークが私は大好きです😊
